Solar Cells, 9 (1983) 359 359 Book Renew Solar Cell Devices Physics by Steven J. Fonash; published by Academic Press, London, March 1982; 332 pp; price, £23.20; ISBN 0-12-261980-3 There are n o w quite a n u m b e r o f b o o k s on various aspects of solar cells, b u t this b o o k b y Fonash will be particularly welcomed b y research students and others entering the field. The b o o k developed from a course for graduate students and this is reflected in the layout.
After a brief discussion of solar energy and photovoltaic conversion, the author develops the basic physics required to understand solar cells. Single-electron band theory, optical absorption and carrier generation, recombination and trapping are all developed at a b o u t final year honours (Gt.
Britain) level. Transport processes in semiconductors are discussed with great clarity, and particular care is taken to examine the validity of the usual assumptions made in the derivations. Gotovij krossvord v excel problems. A very clear and comprehensive account of solar cell materials and structures is given in the third chapter with data tables of properties for all the materials o f major interest. The discussion of interfaces in this chapter is probably the most complete and comprehensive account to be found in any one b o o k. The next three chapters on homojunction, heterojunction and barrier cells have a similar format. A general introduction is followed b y a qualitative discussion which establishes the physical principles involved. A clear mathematical treatment of the junction is then developed, and a short discussion section closes the chapter.
The treatment of each t y p e of junction is clear and comprehensive, with just a b o u t all available cell structures being discussed, and these chapters are a mine of information and perceptive comments. For any research worker in solar cells this b o o k will be invaluable, and anyone starting in the field could have no better introduction.
