Now I want to load games from my 80 GB harddisk, so I formatted the disk (Full) on my old system, which as an IDE interface using Windows HDL Image Install Program 1.7.6 (winhiip).

Also, when I formatted the disk I found a note on a site: “When formatting a drive for HDLoader it is quite acceptable to reduce all the partition sizes to 0Mb, except the '__mbr' & 'HDLoader Settings' partitions, as these are not required for HDLoader to work correctly.” And so, I did only give 128 MB of partition to __boot. After formatting the disk I added 3 ISO game files and also used the correct Mode for them. Now when I load up HDLoader with the R2 button (DEV1) it loads correctly and I choose my game that I want to start.

After that I only see a black screen, which is called I think Black Screen of Death. I’ve check the harddisk and it is absolutely error free (no bad sectors) and has a good S.M.A.R.T status (no errors).

Also, I checked the disk using HDDChecker on my PS2 and no error’s and also good S.M.A.R.T status (OK). My question is what did I overlook or what did I do wrong that HDLoader doesn’t start the games? Everything should work ok!

Thank you for your reply but I don't use any softmod I use the Matrix Infinity mod (firmware 1.93). The softmod is only active if you use a firmware on the memory card.

For some weird reason it needs to detect a DVD in the drive in order for it to work. With DVD in the drive HD Loader loads the games. Without a disk in the drive the screen stays black. It's a strange design fault (Or maybe, a 'feature' by Sony) of the PlayStation 2 console, starting with the SCPH-50000 series. If there isn't a disc inserted into the console, the program will freeze up if a command is sent to the drive. Your copy of HDLoader probably doesn't have that the CD/DVD control part patched out. Do you know how I can get a copy of HDLoader that has the CD/DVD control part patched? You'll have to search for it (The MC version, I think) because it isn't actually legal to get free copies of HDLoader. Unlike OPL, it was sold commercially.
